Banana Donut Holes Recipe

4.4 from 114 reviews

These Banana Donut Holes are a delightful, healthier twist on traditional donuts, made with ripe bananas and self-rising flour, then cooked to golden perfection in an air fryer. Soft and moist on the inside with a cinnamon sugar coating on the outside, they make a perfect quick snack or breakfast treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Banana (1 large banana)
  • 3/4 cup Self-Rising Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup Unrefined Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil (melted, or melted vegan butter)
  • 23 teaspoons Melted Coconut Oil (for kneading and brushing)

Instructions

  1. Mash the Banana: Mash the banana into a smooth puree until you have 1/2 cup. This is crucial to ensure the dough binds properly with the flour.
  2. Mix and Knead Dough: Add the self-rising flour to the mashed banana and stir with a rubber spatula until lumps start to form. Then, oil your hands with melted coconut oil and knead the sticky dough ball gently, adding up to 2-3 teaspoons more oil as needed to keep it moist and elastic without adding extra flour.
  3. Shape Donut Holes: Grease your hands with melted coconut oil, take about one tablespoon of dough each time, roll into small balls, and place them on a parchment-covered plate. Continue until all dough is used. Spray avocado oil lightly over the shaped balls.
  4. Prepare Air Fryer Basket: Spray the air fryer basket with oil to prevent sticking. Arrange the donut holes spaced about 1 inch (3 cm) apart to allow for expansion during cooking.
  5. Air Fry: Cook the donut holes in the air fryer at 350°F (180°C) for 6-7 minutes until they are puffy, golden brown, and dry on the outside. The shapes will be slightly irregular, which is normal.
  6. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: While still warm, brush each donut hole with melted coconut oil using a pastry brush, then roll them thoroughly in cinnamon sugar for a classic donut flavor.
  7. Serve: Serve the banana donut holes warm immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Use self-rising flour for best results; if unavailable, use all-purpose flour with added baking powder and salt.
  • The dough should remain moist and sticky, do not add too much flour.
  • Using coconut oil keeps these donut holes vegan if vegan butter is used as a substitute.
  • Ensure spacing in the air fryer basket for even cooking and to prevent sticking.
  • Enjoy these warm as they taste best fresh out of the air fryer.
