Deliciously bite-sized Cinnamon French Toast Bites, perfect for a fun breakfast or snack. These crispy, cinnamon-sugar coated bread cubes are sautéed to golden perfection and served with sweet maple syrup for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

For the French Toast Bites

  • 4 thick slices slightly stale white bread (1″/2.5cm thick)
  • 2 large eggs (or 3 small eggs)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp butter (separated)

For the Coating

  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

To Serve

  • Maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Cut the crusts off the bread slices, then cut each slice into 9 equal cubes to create bite-sized pieces perfect for dipping and cooking evenly.
  2. Make the egg mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt until well combined to create the custard base for the French toast.
  3. Mix cinnamon sugar: In a shallow bowl, combine the white sugar and cinnamon powder thoroughly for coating the cooked bread bites.
  4. Heat the butter: Melt 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat, being careful not to let it brown to prevent a burnt flavor.
  5. Cook half the bread bites: Quickly toss half of the bread cubes in the egg mixture, shaking off any excess. Place them in the hot pan and sauté using a wooden spoon, turning gently until golden brown on all sides, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Coat in cinnamon sugar: Remove the cooked bread cubes from the pan and immediately toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat them evenly before placing onto a serving plate.
  7. Repeat with remaining bread cubes: Melt the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons butter and repeat the cooking and coating process with the rest of the bread cubes.
  8. Serve: Serve the French Toast Bites immediately while warm, accompanied by maple syrup for dipping.

Notes

  • Using slightly stale bread helps the cubes soak up the egg mixture without becoming too soggy.
  • Do not let the butter brown during cooking to ensure a clean, buttery flavor.
  • Serve immediately for the crispiest texture and best taste.
  • Maple syrup is essential as a sweet complement; do not skip it.
  • Can be made with gluten-free bread for a gluten-free version.
