Ingredients

Scale

Crumb Topping

  • 1/4 cup cold butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Donuts

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 6-mold donut pan with non-stick baking spray and set it aside.
  2. Make the Crumb Topping: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the cold butter pieces and quickly work them into the dry ingredients with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Place the crumb topping in the freezer to chill while preparing the donut batter.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  4. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, sour cream, light brown sugar, and melted butter until smooth.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, taking care not to overmix to keep the batter light and tender.
  6. Fill the Donut Pan: Using a spoon or piping bag, evenly fill each mold of the prepared donut pan with the batter. Be careful not to overfill to allow room for rising.
  7. Add Crumb Topping: Sprinkle the chilled crumb topping evenly over each donut batter-filled mold.
  8. Bake: Bake the donuts in the preheated oven for 10-11 minutes or until they spring back lightly when pressed and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool: Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before gently removing them. Transfer the donuts to a wire rack to cool for a few more minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter for the crumb topping is cold to create a crumbly texture.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the donuts tender and soft.
  • Use a piping bag for neater filling of the donut pan molds.
  • Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days.
  • These donuts can be gently rewarmed in a microwave for 10-15 seconds before serving.
