Scale

Seasoning

  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Main Ingredients

  • ½ Tablespoon olive or avocado oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef (90/10 recommended)
  • 2 Tablespoons beef broth or water (more if needed)
  • 2 Tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice

To Serve

  • Lime wedges
  • Small soft corn or flour tortillas
  • Shredded cheddar or Mexican cheese
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Diced red onion
  • Sour cream
  • Avocado chunks or guacamole
  • Salsa
  • Hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Make seasoning: In a small bowl, combine chili powder, ground cumin, kosher salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, dried oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes if using. Set aside this taco seasoning blend.
  2. Sauté aromatics: Heat olive or avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced yellow onion and minced garlic, sautéing for 5-6 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Cook beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes or until fully browned. Use a wooden spoon to break the meat into small pieces as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary, especially if not using lean beef.
  4. Add spices: Sprinkle the prepared taco seasoning over the cooked beef mixture and stir well to coat the meat evenly. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to allow the spices to develop aroma.
  5. Simmer mixture: Pour in the beef broth (or water), tomato paste, and lime juice. Stir to combine all ingredients thoroughly, then let the mixture simmer for 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors and thicken slightly.
  6. Warm tortillas: While the beef simmers, warm your tortillas either in a dry pan over medium-high heat for a few minutes or wrapped in foil in a 350°F oven for 5-10 minutes until pliable and heated through.
  7. Assemble tacos: Spoon the seasoned ground beef onto warmed tortillas. Top with shredded cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes, chopped cilantro, diced red onion, sour cream, avocado or guacamole, salsa, and hot sauce as desired. Serve with lime wedges on the side for squeezing over.

Notes

  • Using 90/10 lean ground beef reduces excess grease, but you can drain fat if necessary with other beef blends.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes to control the heat level of your taco meat.
  • Warm tortillas just before serving so they stay soft and flexible for easy folding.
  • This recipe can be doubled easily for larger crowds.
  • For gluten-free tacos, opt for corn tortillas and check all seasoning labels.
