Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp Coating

  • 12 ounces shrimp (deveined, shell-on)
  • 2 tablespoons mochiko flour (can substitute regular flour)
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Garlic Butter Sauce

  • 1 head garlic, minced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Pat the shrimp dry thoroughly using paper towels and set aside to ensure the coating adheres well.
  2. Coat the shrimp: In a mixing bowl, combine mochiko flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt. Add the shrimp and toss thoroughly to coat each piece evenly. Set aside.
  3. Cook the garlic butter: In a large pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic once the butter is melted and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the garlic turns golden brown and toasty. Be careful not to burn it. Pour the garlic butter into a bowl, leaving the pan.
  4. Cook the shrimp: Add olive oil to the same skillet. When the oil is warm, add the shrimp in a single layer (cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding). Fry the shrimp for about 2 minutes on each side until they become crispy and a beautiful golden brown color.
  5. Combine shrimp and garlic butter: Pour the reserved garlic butter back into the skillet with the shrimp. Stir to coat the shrimp well and cook together for another minute to enhance the flavors.
  6. Serve: Remove from heat, optionally squeeze fresh lemon juice over the shrimp, and serve hot with steamed rice for a classic Hawaiian meal experience.

Notes

  • Use shrimp with shells on for maximum flavor.
  • Mochiko flour adds a unique texture but can be replaced with regular flour if unavailable.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper to taste based on preferred spice level.
  • Cook shrimp in batches to ensure even browning and crispiness.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
