Meat Mixture
- 1–1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- 1 can (15 ounces) pizza sauce
- 1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Buns and Cheese
- 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
- 1–1/2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
- Cook the Beef Mixture: In a large cast-iron or other heavy skillet, heat over medium heat. Add ground beef and chopped onion, cooking until the beef is no longer pink, about 3-5 minutes. Break the beef into crumbles as it cooks. Drain off any excess fat.
- Add Sauce and Seasonings: Stir in the pizza sauce, drained mushrooms, sugar, and dried oregano. Mix everything well to combine all the flavors thoroughly.
- Assemble the Burgers: Spoon the beef and pizza sauce mixture evenly onto the toasted hamburger buns. Generously sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
- Broil the Burgers: Place the assembled burgers on ungreased baking sheets. Position the baking sheets about 4 inches from the heat source in your oven’s broiler. Broil for approximately 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
