Bone Broth Ingredients

  • 34 lbs. beef bones
  • 1 yellow onion, quartered
  • 1 head of garlic, cut in half
  • 2 carrots, cut into pieces
  • 2 celery ribs, cut into pieces
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 8 cups water
  • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tsp. grated ginger
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. salt (add to taste)

Instructions

  1. Roast the Bones: Preheat your oven to broil. Arrange the beef bones on a sheet pan and place under the broiler. Brown the bones for about 5 minutes on each side, adjusting time based on their proximity to the heat source, until nicely golden for enhanced flavor.
  2. Load Slow Cooker: Transfer the roasted bones to your slow cooker. Add the quartered onion, halved garlic, chopped carrots, celery ribs, bay leaves, apple cider vinegar, and water. These aromatics and the vinegar help release minerals and deepen the broth’s taste.
  3. Cook the Broth: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 12 hours. You may simmer even longer if desired to extract maximum nutrients and flavor from the bones and vegetables.
  4. Strain the Broth: Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl. Ladle the broth through to separate out the solids. Press down on the vegetables gently to extract all the flavorful juices. Discard the bones and veggie remnants.
  5. Finalize and Serve: Stir in the grated ginger, lemon juice, and salt to taste. Serve the broth immediately for a warming drink or as a base for recipes. Allow to cool and refrigerate or freeze for future use, skimming off any fat as desired.

Notes

  • Roasting the bones before slow cooking enhances the depth and richness of the broth.
  • Apple cider vinegar helps draw minerals like calcium from the bones.
  • Cooking low and slow ensures a clear, flavorful broth full of nutrients.
  • You can store the broth in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze it for up to 3 months.
  • Skim any fat from the surface before serving, or stir it in for extra richness depending on preference.
