Create a spooky and delicious Spider Web Pizza perfect for Halloween gatherings. This recipe uses a crispy pizza crust layered with savory pizza sauce and melty low-moisture mozzarella cheese, topped with a piped sour cream spider web design and decorated with olive spiders for a fun and festive presentation. Easy to make with store-bought or homemade dough, it is a playful and tasty way to impress your guests with a creepy-crawly themed pizza.

Ingredients

Scale

Pizza Base

  • 1 pound (about 16 ounces) store-bought or homemade pizza dough
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for brushing crust)
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal (optional, for dusting pizza pan)

Sauce and Cheese

  • ¾ cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • 2 ½ cups shredded low-moisture, whole milk mozzarella cheese

Spider Web and Decoration

  • ¼ cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 can (6 ounces) jumbo black olives, pitted

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and the Canvas: Position the oven rack in the center and preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a pizza stone in the oven if using. Lightly grease a 12- or 14-inch round pizza pan or large baking sheet and sprinkle with cornmeal for extra crispiness if desired.
  2. Shape the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, press and stretch the dough into a 12- to 14-inch circle, docking the dough to release air bubbles. If the dough resists, let it rest 5-10 minutes and try again. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan and pinch a slightly thicker rim around the edges. Optionally, brush the rim with olive oil.
  3. Lay the Foundation of Flavor: Spread ¾ cup of pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a ½-inch border for the crust. Sprinkle 2 ½ cups shredded mozzarella evenly over the sauce to create a thick white cheese layer that will serve as the canvas for the spider web design.
  4. Weave the Web: Place the ¼ cup sour cream in a squeeze bottle or small plastic bag with a tiny corner cut off. Pipe a continuous spiral from the center outward until about an inch from the edge of the cheese. Using a toothpick or skewer, drag lines from the center outwards 6 to 8 times evenly spaced, wiping the tip clean each time, to transform the spiral into a spider web pattern.
  5. Unleash the Spiders and Bake: Make spiders by placing a whole black olive as the body and slicing additional olives lengthwise into thin strips for legs, arranging four legs on each side. Place 3 to 5 spiders across the web for effect. Bake the pizza on the center rack for 12 to 18 minutes until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly and lightly browned. Remove and let rest a few minutes before slicing and serving hot.

Notes

  • Use low-moisture mozzarella shredded from a block for the best melt and appearance.
  • Full-fat sour cream is essential for the web design; avoid low-fat versions due to higher water content.
  • Rest the dough if it springs back during shaping to help gluten relax.
  • Use freshly pitted jumbo black olives for spider bodies and sliced legs.
  • Watch the pizza towards the end of baking to avoid browning the sour cream decoration.
  • Optional olive oil brushing on crust adds a glossy, golden finish.
  • Cornmeal on the pan helps create a crispy crust and makes the pizza easier to remove.
