4.5 from 684 reviews

Learn the best method to freeze cakes to preserve their freshness and texture. This comprehensive guide provides step-by-step instructions for wrapping, freezing, and thawing baked cakes to enjoy them later without compromising taste.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Baked and completely cooled cake(s) (any shape or flavor)
  • Press & Seal wrap or plastic wrap
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions

  1. Bake and cool the cake: Bake your desired cake and allow it to cool completely to room temperature. This ensures no residual heat will cause condensation during freezing.
  2. Wrap with Press & Seal: Wrap the cooled cake tightly with Press & Seal wrap, as it seals better than standard plastic wrap and helps retain freshness.
  3. Label the cake: Write the cake type and use-by date clearly on a piece of aluminum foil using a marker. To avoid ink seeping through, label the foil before wrapping the cake.
  4. Wrap with aluminum foil: Wrap the cake thoroughly in the labeled aluminum foil over the Press & Seal layer to provide an additional barrier against freezer burn.
  5. Place in freezer-safe container or additional foil: Put the wrapped cake inside a freezer-safe container for protection. If you don’t have a container large enough, add another layer of aluminum foil ensuring the labeled side is on the outside.
  6. Freeze: Freeze the cake for up to 3 months for optimal freshness. While cakes can be kept longer, texture and flavor may degrade after this time.
  7. Thaw in refrigerator: When ready to enjoy, transfer the cake from freezer to refrigerator still wrapped, and let it thaw for at least 8 hours or overnight. Thawing in the wrapping prevents condensation from damaging the cake’s surface.
  8. Serve: After thawing, unwrap the cake, assemble and decorate as desired, then enjoy your cake as if freshly baked.

Notes

  • Press & Seal wrap is preferred for wrapping cakes because it is less sticky and keeps cakes fresher than traditional plastic wrap.
  • Labeling the foil before wrapping prevents ink from bleeding onto the cake.
  • Freeze cakes for no longer than 3 months to maintain best taste and texture.
  • Always thaw cakes while wrapped to avoid moisture damage from condensation.
  • This freezing method works for all cake shapes, including round, square, rectangle, and Bundt cakes.
