Ingredients

Scale

Beef Mixture

  • 16 oz lean ground beef
  • ½ cup diced yellow onions
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Dough and Toppings

  • 16 oz pizza dough
  • 8 oz Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded and divided
  • ½ Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook beef mixture: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, diced yellow onions, and minced garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-9 minutes until the beef is fully browned and onions are softened.
  2. Add seasonings: Stir in drained diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, kosher salt, and black pepper. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until most of the liquid has evaporated. Drain any remaining excess liquid if needed.
  3. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the pinwheels.
  4. Prepare muffin tin: Lightly spray a 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  5. Roll pizza dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a 12 by 15-inch rectangle.
  6. Add filling: Spread the cooked hamburger mixture evenly over the dough, leaving about a ½-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle approximately three-quarters of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the beef mixture.
  7. Form log and slice: Starting with one of the short sides, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Using a serrated knife, slice the log into 12 equal pinwheels and place each one into a cup of the prepared muffin tin.
  8. Bake pinwheels: Brush the tops of the pinwheels with olive oil, then sprinkle sesame seeds evenly over them. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the tops turn a light golden brown.
  9. Add more cheese: Remove the muffin tin from the oven and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese on top of each pinwheel. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted.
  10. Cool and serve: Allow the pinwheels to cool in the muffin tin for several minutes before carefully removing them. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease during cooking.
  • Ensure the diced tomatoes are well drained to avoid soggy pinwheels.
  • The sesame seeds on top add a nutty crunch but can be omitted if preferred.
  • Leftover pinwheels can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best texture.
  • For a spicier kick, add chili flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture.
